Nile rafting in Jinja today
The Nile leaves Lake Victoria at Jinja and runs north through a stretch of rapids. Two dams changed that stretch. The Bujagali power station started operating in 2012, after the first flooding in 2011, and turned the old Bujagali rapids into calm reservoir water. The Isimba station has run commercially since 30 March 2019. Operators still sell rafting on the river between and below these dams, with trips from Grade 3 to Grade 5.
Rafting, flat-water paddling and lake trips are different products. A Grade 5 trip does not start as a whitewater run straight out of the lake. The operator drives you from town or camp to the put-in. The examples below come from single operators and show what one product lists in 2026. They are not a ranking and not a full list of the market.

Rafting trips compared

Under 18, guardian conditions apply for the Grade 5 trip. The family float lists no clear upper age limit for children. Prices and ages can change, so confirm them with the operator before you pay.

What the river is like after the dams
Fewer old rapids, but whitewater remains.
Adrift describes its Grade 5 trip in terms of named rapids. Overtime is listed as Grade 5, Retrospect and Bubugo as Grade 4. The description then continues toward the Itanda and Kalagala area. That is an operator's account of part of its route. It is not an official list of rapids.
Do not plan around the old rapids you may read about in older guides. The Bujagali Falls are under water. For the history and for what you can still see, read the page on Itanda Falls and the former Bujagali Falls.
The Grade 3 trip suits groups with younger members. The operator describes a briefing, helmet and life jacket, a safety raft and safety kayaks. The family float runs on calm water below the Owen Falls Dam and ends at the Explorers River Camp at Bujagali, with departures between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.

Ages, fitness and swimming
The rules differ by operator and by grade.
Minimum age
There is no single age rule. Nile River Explorers lists 16 years for Grade 5 and 8 years with at least 30 kg for Grade 3. The older figure of 12 years that you may still find online is not a general standard.
The Adrift exception
Adrift's main description says 16 years. Its FAQ allows younger rafters in some cases: the adult life jacket must fit, the trip leader checks in the morning, and two rapids must be walked around. An old blog post from about 2022 says 12. Treat that as outdated and ask before you book.
Swimming
Every trip involves a chance of ending up in the water. Ask the operator how it handles weak swimmers before you book.
Water contact and health
The CDC names the Nile and Lake Victoria as places where schistosomiasis can be caught, and advises avoiding swimming in fresh, unchlorinated water. A family float that advertises swimming is not a health clearance. Read the safety page for the wider picture.

Nile River Explorers
The day price covers equipment, a briefing and safety support. Buses leave the camp at 9:00 a.m. and Jinja at 9:30 to 9:45 a.m. Tell the operator your pickup place the day before.
Adrift from Kampala
Adrift lists a free Kampala shuttle from 4 people and Jinja pickup from 2 people. Kampala meeting points are Acacia Mall at 6:15 a.m., Sheraton at 6:20 a.m. and Game/Lugogo Mall at 6:30 a.m. In Jinja the meeting time is 8:30 a.m. Pickup at Entebbe is possible only on request and costs extra. These are listed times, not a public timetable.
How to get to Jinja โSafety equipment
Life jackets, helmets and safety kayakers are what the operators describe. These are operator statements. They are not an official safety certification, and this page gives no accident figures. No trip is risk free.
Cameras and the dam
The UK travel advice notes a photography ban at military, official and diplomatic sites, including the Owen Falls Dam near Jinja. A rafting trip is not a general permission to photograph power stations.

Nile rafting: frequently asked questions
Is Nile rafting still possible after the dams?
Yes. Operators list trips from Grade 3 to Grade 5 for 2026. The Bujagali station (2012) and the Isimba station (commercial since 30 March 2019) changed the river, but the listed Grade 5 trip still runs about 15 km.
How much does rafting cost in Jinja?
One operator lists $140 per person for its Grade 5 trip and for the Grade 3 trip for adults, and $95 for children under 16 on Grade 3. The family float costs $30 for adults and $20 for children. These are single products in 2026, not a market range.
What is the minimum age for rafting?
It depends on the trip and the operator: 16 years for Grade 5 at Nile River Explorers, 8 years and 30 kg for Grade 3, and 4 years for the family float. Adrift lists 16 years with an exception process in its FAQ.
Is there a good month for rafting?
Jinja's main rains fall from March to May and from September to November, with drier spells from December to February and from June to August. That is a rough pattern and no guarantee of dry days. Ask the operator about conditions on your date.
Can I raft as a day trip from Kampala?
Adrift lists a Kampala shuttle with a 6:15 a.m. first pickup, free from 4 people. Check the meeting point and the shuttle terms when you book.
