Sipi Falls at a glance

Sipi Falls lies near Kapchorwa on the slopes of Mount Elgon in eastern Uganda. Operators describe three main waterfalls. Most visitors come for a guided walk past the falls and for a coffee tour on the farms of the area. Published heights are not official survey values, so this page gives none.

Sipi is a long way from Jinja, and it is not a quick add-on to a rafting day. Operators give different transfer times, so plan a night in the area or an early start and a late return. This is an independent guide. It is not run by a lodge, a tour operator or a government body, and the prices below are operator prices, not park fees.

Our pick: a two-day Sipi trip

Our take: Sipi is too far for a quick add-on, and this two-day tour is built around an overnight stay instead of a rushed day trip. Check how you will reach the meeting point.

Getting from Jinja to Sipi

The road, the time and how to split the trip.

Transfer time

One operator gives 3 to 4 hours from Jinja, another 4 to 5 hours. There is no consistent distance figure, and no operator promises a time. Do not plan a return trip in half a day.

Stay a night

A night near the falls lets you walk in daylight on the next morning and drive back without a rush. The UK government advises against traveling outside big cities after dark.

Where to stay โ†’

Public transport and drivers

The UK government advises against boda-boda motorcycle taxis and matatu minibuses and mentions accidents on the Jinja to Kampala road. A private driver or a tour with a transfer is the more cautious choice.

Safety page โ†’

A combined trip

Sipi fits into a longer Uganda circuit. If you only have a few days, a Nile and Jinja stay may be enough, and Sipi can wait for a second trip.

Weather, rain and safety on the slope

Mount Elgon is wet in the rainy seasons.

Landslide warning

The UK government warns of landslides in eastern Uganda in heavy rain and names the Bududa and Bulucheke area near Mount Elgon. That is a regional warning. It does not mean that Sipi is closed. Ask your lodge or guide about the trail and the road on the day.

Rainy seasons

The Jinja city website describes main rains from March to May and a second rainy season from September to November. Sipi is in the hills, so do not use lowland figures for its temperatures. A rainy day can make paths slippery and views short.

Best time to visit โ†’

Footwear and pace

Wear shoes with grip, carry water and rain cover, and follow your guide's advice near the edges. Choose a shorter walk if the ground is wet.

Swimming at the falls

The CDC advises avoiding swimming in fresh, unchlorinated water. Do not assume that a pool is safe or permitted. Ask your guide before you enter the water.
