Safaris from Jinja at a glance

Jinja is a base for the Nile, not for game drives. The nearest big parks are a long day away, so a safari from Jinja is a multi-hour transfer and, in most cases, a night or more at the park. This page is an orientation for onward travel. It is an independent guide and is not run by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) or by a safari operator.

Murchison Falls, where the Nile forces its way through a gorge, is the park most people mean. Lake Mburo and Queen Elizabeth National Park lie on the other side of Kampala. Gorilla trekking takes place in Bwindi and Mgahinga in the southwest and is not a day trip from Jinja. Do not expect to see lions near Jinja.

Murchison Falls from Jinja

One operator lists 5 to 6 hours from Jinja to Murchison. Another gives about 7 hours and a route through Masindi, with an older description of a ferry crossing. Neither figure is an official or traffic-free time, so ask your operator which route and which entrance they use.

The base tariff lists adult entry per 24 hours at $45 for foreign non-residents, $35 for foreign residents, $30 for Rest of Africa and UGX 25,000 for East African citizens. For children it lists $25, $15, $10 and UGX 10,000. The tariff that carries these figures is labeled July 2024 to December 2026, and UWA has a separate document of tariff changes for 2026 to 2027. Treat the figures above as base rates and confirm the current price.

Plan at least one night near the park. With 5 to 7 hours in each direction, a one-day return from Jinja leaves little time for the park itself. Boat cruises, fees and lodges are covered in the Murchison Falls guide.

Lake Mburo, Queen Elizabeth and gorillas

Parks beyond Kampala, which need more time.

Lake Mburo

UWA describes zebras and impalas, game drives, boat trips and guided walking safaris, with Nshara and Sanga as access points. The distance of about 228 km and 3.5 hours is measured from Kampala, not from Jinja. Children aged 5 to 15 pay a reduced rate, and children under 5 enter free. Carry ID, because the fee depends on your residence status. Boat trips, horseback safaris and fees are covered in the Lake Mburo guide.

Queen Elizabeth

UWA names the Ishasha lions and the Kazinga boat trips. The drive from Kampala is at least 7 to 8 hours, so this is a trip for several days. Read the advisories below for the western parks first. Kazinga cruises, Ishasha and fees are covered in the Queen Elizabeth guide, and chimpanzee trekking nearby in the Kibale guide.

Gorilla trekking

Trekking takes place in Bwindi and Mgahinga and lasts roughly 2 to 7 hours, followed by one hour with the gorillas. Mgahinga has about 8 permits a day. The base permit price includes a guide, the park entry on the trekking day and a community share. A tour company reports a UWA notice of 26 February 2026 that sets low-season permits in April, May and November at $600 for foreign non-residents and $500 for foreign residents, with no rebooking, and requires full payment since 1 March 2026 instead of an unpaid seven-day hold. Confirm both points with UWA or your operator. Permits, sectors and trips are covered in the Bwindi guide.

Travel advisories for safari areas

The governments give different advice. This page does not give an overall verdict.

United Kingdom

The FCDO advice, updated on 8 October 2026, asks for particular care in the west on the border with the DR Congo, in border parks, on the South Sudan border and in Karamoja. The "against all travel" wording applies to named areas of the DR Congo and South Sudan, not to all of Uganda.

Germany

The Federal Foreign Office (last changed 9 October 2026) urges you to avoid non-essential travel to Semliki National Park and advises against non-essential travel in the rest of the 20 km border strip with the DR Congo. It asks for particular care around Queen Elizabeth, Bwindi, Mgahinga, Ruwenzori, the Virunga volcanoes and Karamoja.

United States

The State Department issued Level 4, "Do not travel", for Uganda as a whole on 4 June 2026, citing crime, health, terrorism and unrest.

Border and health

The FCDO notes that the border with the DR Congo has been closed since 27 May 2026, with limited exceptions. For health advice and entry rules, see the safety and getting-there pages.
