Mabira Forest at a glance

Mabira Forest Reserve is a block of rainforest between Kampala and Jinja. The National Forestry Authority (NFA) puts the forest 26 km from Jinja and 54 km from Kampala. The ecotourism area is about 0.5 km from the main road, reached by a dirt track. The distances come from the NFA, so use them as a rough guide and not as a travel time.

The NFA lists about 68 km of forest trails and 315 bird species. Typical activities are forest walks, birdwatching and mountain biking. That is a general description of the reserve, and it does not mean that every trail is open on the day you arrive. This guide is independent and is not run by the NFA, a camp or a tour operator.

The zipline: what is known

Griffin Falls Camp, a private camp at the forest, still lists a zipline among its services. Its website links a price list called "Price List 2026", but the page it leads to is a service card dated 2024. The listing shows that the zipline is offered on the web. It does not show that it runs on a given day in October or later.

The 2024 service card is the only price reference available, so treat it as history and not as a quote:

  • Zipline: UGX 60,000 for Ugandans and $50 for non-Ugandans (2024).
  • Entry permit: UGX 5,000 for Ugandans and UGX 20,000 for non-Ugandans (2024).
  • Nature walk: UGX 5,000 and UGX 30,000 (2024).

These are not NFA prices. Adding single items together may not give your real total. Before you plan around the zipline, ask the camp whether it is operating, what it costs now, and which age, weight and weather rules apply.

Getting to Mabira from Jinja

Two different entrances, two different roads.

The ecotourism area

The NFA describes an access of about 0.5 km from the main road along a dirt track. The road to Jinja passes through the forest, as the photo above shows. Ask your operator which entrance a tour uses.

The private camp

The 2024 service card describes the camp as about 10 km north of Lugazi. That is a different approach from the NFA turn-off, and it is an older description. Confirm the directions with the camp.

Time on the road

No fixed driving time applies between Jinja and the forest, because traffic on the main road varies. The UK government advises against traveling outside big cities after dark and mentions accidents on the Jinja to Kampala road. Plan to be back before nightfall.

From Kampala or Entebbe

Mabira lies on the way, so a stop fits a transfer day.

Getting there โ†’

A half day in the forest

A simple way to plan a visit.

Go early

Morning is a sensible time for a walk or for birding. Start before the heat and leave the return trip for daylight.

Wear the right gear

Bring closed shoes, long trousers against insects, water and rain cover. Malaria risk applies across Uganda according to the CDC, so use mosquito protection and speak to a doctor about prophylaxis.

Ask before you pay

Ask for the fee for each item, who it goes to and whether a guide is required. Do not pay for an activity that the provider cannot confirm for your day.
