Your options in detail
What to expect on each leg.
Arriving at Entebbe
Entebbe International Airport is the entry point. From there, Jinja is a long ride of about 130 km. Arrange a private transfer in advance, or plan a first night near the airport or in Kampala. Book your first pickup before you land.
By bus or matatu from Kampala
Buses and matatus connect Kampala and Jinja, and the journey takes longer in heavy traffic. The UK government advises against matatus and boda-bodas (motorbike taxis), so weigh that before you choose them.
Private car or driver
A driver gives you flexibility for a stop at Mabira Forest, which lies about 26 km from Jinja along the main road. The road between Jinja and Kampala has a record of accidents according to the UK advice. Start early and aim to arrive in daylight.
Operator shuttles from Kampala
One rafting operator offers a free Kampala shuttle for its day trip when 4 or more people book, and pickup in Jinja from 2 people. Listed Kampala meeting points are Acacia Mall at 06:15, Sheraton at 06:20 and Game at Lugogo Mall at 06:30, with Jinja pickup at 08:30. Entebbe pickup is only available on request for an extra cost. These are offer times, not a public timetable.
Rafting on the Nile โAround town and across the river
Jinja town lies on the east bank. Njeru is on the opposite west bank, and access and entry prices at the Source of the Nile can differ between the two sides. The Bujagali rafting camp is about 7 km from the roundabout after the new Nile bridge, plus a final signed turn.

Uganda visa and entry rules in 2026
Entry rules depend on your nationality, so check the requirements for your passport before you buy flights. Most visitors who need a visa apply for the single-entry tourist eVisa. As of October 2026 it costs $50, plus a bank fee for which no single amount is published.
The process starts online. After approval you present your documents and give biometrics on arrival. The approval letter is valid for 90 days from the approval date. A single-entry visa allows a stay of up to 3 months, though the length is not guaranteed at the border. Have a passport copy valid for at least 6 months, a travel plan or proof of accommodation, and a photo ready. Do not plan to get the visa at the airport without prior approval.
Yellow fever: Uganda's immigration notice of 2 October 2026 states that the vaccination certificate is no longer mandatory for entry, and the UK advice followed on 8 October 2026. An older application FAQ still lists the certificate, so the sources differ. A medical vaccination recommendation is a separate matter, and a country you visit next may ask for proof. Talk to a doctor before you travel.
The border between Uganda and the DR Congo has been closed since 27 May 2026, with limited exceptions, according to the UK advice. Do not build a border crossing into your plan without checking first.
Safety and health advice โThe Kampala to Jinja Expressway
A Kampala to Jinja Expressway is a planned public-private project. The works ministry published tenders for advisers in February and April 2026, and a September 2026 travel report says construction had not started. Plan your trip on the existing road. Do not expect a toll road or a faster link.
Congestion on the existing road is the main reason journeys vary so much. Start early, add a buffer on the day of a flight, and avoid tight connections.
