Boat trips on the Nile at Jinja

The Nile leaves Lake Victoria at Jinja, and the water here is wide and slow compared with the rapids further downstream. Two cruise formats run from a base camp near the river: a sunset cruise in the late afternoon and a midday cruise around lunchtime. Both last two hours. Smaller options include paddle tours on the Bujagali reservoir and an island trip on Lake Victoria.

The times and prices below are one operator's 2026 listings, with reservation required. Private boats at the Nile source, and the entry fee on the shore there, are priced separately and are not part of these cruises. See the source of the Nile for that.

Birdwatching on the water

Possible sightings, not promises.

Kayak the Nile describes its two-hour Bujagali tour as a bird outing, with pied kingfishers, cormorants and possibly African fish eagles. It quotes about 20 species seen per day. That figure is the operator's own and not an official count. Sightings depend on the day, the light and the water level. Cormorants sit on rocks in the river, and fish eagles perch in trees on the shore.

A paddle tour at $40 per person suits birdwatchers who prefer a quiet boat. Guide, equipment and drinks are included, and the single and group tariff are the same. For more on paddle trips, see activities in Jinja.

Island and lake trips

A short note on Samuka and the Lake Victoria shore.

Samuka Island

The Jinja city site describes Samuka as an island in Lake Victoria about 9 km from Jinja, roughly 40 minutes by speedboat, and a birdwatching area. Ask a local operator for a boat, a price and a date before you plan around it.

Lake Victoria at Jinja

The lake shore, fishing boats and the outflow have their own page. See Lake Victoria at Jinja. The Ssese Islands are a different destination and are not covered on this site.

Rafting and flat-water floats

If you want moving water rather than a cruise, read about Nile rafting. A family float on calm water is listed there as well.

Choosing a cruise

Time of day, price and what you get.

Sunset or midday

The sunset cruise costs $45 and includes an open bar and a return transfer from Jinja. The midday cruise costs $30 and includes snacks and the transfer, with drinks as an extra. Both last two hours.

Combining with rafting

A rafting day starts at the camp around 9:00 a.m. and has 4 to 5 hours on the river. The sunset boat leaves Jinja Base Camp at 16:15. Check the timing with the operator if you want both on one day.
