Jinja at a glance
Jinja lies in eastern Uganda, where Lake Victoria drains into the Victoria Nile. The tourist "source of the Nile" is this lake outflow, not the most distant stream of the whole river system. Around it you find white-water rafting, kayaking, boat trips, the rapids near Itanda Falls and a town with an old main street.
This guide covers Jinja and what you can reach from it: the source of the Nile, rafting, adventure activities, boat trips, Itanda Falls, the lake shore, Mabira Forest, Sipi Falls and safaris that start from Jinja. It also explains how to get here, where to stay, when to go and what the official travel advice says. The Ssese Islands in Lake Victoria are not covered here. This is an independent site, not run by the city, a tourism authority, a wildlife authority or a tour company. Prices are those listed in 2026 and they change.

Good to know before you book
Where older guides are out of date or contradict each other.
Yellow fever certificate
An official notice of 2 October 2026 says the yellow fever vaccination certificate is no longer compulsory for entry. A vaccination recommendation is a separate medical question. An older, undated application FAQ still lists the certificate, so check the current rule before you fly.
Getting to Jinja โTravel advice differs by country
The US State Department shows level 4, "Do not travel", for Uganda as a whole (issued 4 June 2026). The UK FCDO (changed 8 October 2026) and the German Foreign Office (changed 9 October 2026) name specific areas and risks instead. Read the current text of your own government.
Safety and health โBujagali Falls are under a reservoir
The old Bujagali rapids became calm reservoir water after the dam. The power station started operating in 2012, and the first flooding was already in 2011. Do not plan a hike to a waterfall there. Rafting itself continues, with offers up to Grade 5.
Itanda Falls โSwimming in the lake or river
The US health agency CDC names the Nile and Lake Victoria as places where bilharzia is passed on. Fast water is not a safe exception. Rafting and kayaking involve water contact, so ask your doctor before you go.
Health points โZipline in Mabira
A forest camp lists a zipline, but its price sheet is from 2024 and no current opening is confirmed. Treat the zipline as offered earlier and ask the operator before you plan around it.
Mabira Forest โBungee
One operator offers bungee from its own tower near Kalagala, with a weight range of 35 to 110 kg. Treat a jump as booked only after you have a confirmation. Claims of a jump from the Source of the Nile Bridge contradict each other.
Adventure activities โJinja: frequently asked questions
Is Jinja really the source of the Nile?
The tourist source is the place where Lake Victoria flows out into the Victoria Nile. It is not the most distant stream feeding the whole river system. The source of the Nile page explains what you can see and how to get on the water.
How far is Jinja from Kampala and Entebbe?
Kampala to Jinja is about 80 km, reached by bus or matatu, and often takes 2 to 3 hours or more in traffic. One safari operator gives 130 km and 3 to 4 hours for the route between Jinja and Entebbe. Boda-bodas and matatus are discouraged by the UK FCDO. See getting there.
Do I need a visa for Uganda?
Most visitors apply online for a tourist visa before travel. A single-entry visa costs $50 plus a bank fee, and a stay of up to 3 months is possible but not guaranteed. Do not plan to sort it out at the airport. Rules depend on nationality, so check the immigration site.
How much does white-water rafting cost?
One operator lists $140 per person for a Grade 5 day (from 16 years) and $140 for adults on Grade 3 ($95 for children under 16, from 8 years and 30 kg). A calm family float costs $30 for adults. See the rafting page.
Is Jinja safe for visitors?
The official advice differs by country and changes. Check the current texts of the UK, German and US governments, and read the health points on the safety page. The UK FCDO advises against driving after dark outside big towns, and the CDC recommends a life jacket on boat trips.
Is visitjinja.org run by the city or a tour operator?
No. This is an independent travel guide with no link to Jinja City, the Uganda Tourism Board, the Uganda Wildlife Authority or any tour operator.
