Jinja hotels and lodges fall into a few areas: the town itself, the river camps around Bujagali, and stays further along the Nile. Your choice affects pickups, distances and noise.

Where to base yourself in Jinja

The main choice is town or river. Jinja town is on the east bank of the Nile, with shops and the Main Street arcades within reach. The river camps lie outside town, near the rafting start and the former Bujagali rapids. Not every Nile lodge is within walking distance of the town center.

This page names the places that operators and their own pages describe. Rates, room types and availability change by season, so ask each property for the current rate. Nothing here is a ranking.

The areas in detail

What each base means for your days.

Jinja town

The town sits on the east bank of the Nile. It suits a stay where you want to walk to a meal or a market and take trips by pickup. Rafting operators run separate pickups for town and for their camps, and one asks you to tell them your pickup point the day before.

Bujagali and the river camps

One rafting operator separates Jinja town from its Explorers River Camp in Bujagali and gives each its own pickup time. The camp lies about 7 km from the roundabout after the new Nile bridge, then a last signed turn. It suits you if your rafting day starts early and you want to be at the base.

Near Kalagala and Itanda

Another operator describes Adrift River Club as 5 minutes on foot from the Kalagala waterfall viewpoint, and Adrift Overland Camp as a camping offer. The viewpoint link shows where the stay sits, not that every path is open to the public. Check access with the property.

Itanda Falls โ†’

A lodge on a private island

Lemala Wildwaters Lodge is described on a private island in the Nile. The operator names children from 16 years for this lodge. Do not apply that limit to other places. Ask the lodge about boat access and meals before you plan around it.

Rafting and a night's stay

One rafting operator says a full rafting day can include a free dorm night or a discount on a tent or room. Treat that as an offer to confirm, not a free hotel room. Availability and terms for the date matter.

Practical tips for choosing

Match the base to your plans. If you raft, kayak or take a sunset cruise, ask the operator where it picks up. If you want day trips, remember that Mabira Forest is about 26 km from Jinja, Sipi Falls is a drive of about 3 to 5 hours depending on the operator, and Murchison Falls is roughly 5 to 7 hours. Those trips are long days from any base.

Arrive in daylight. The UK government advises against driving outside big cities after dark, and against boda-bodas and matatus. If your lodge is on a side road, ask for the current directions and arrange the last stretch with a driver you know.

Avoid assuming a pool, air conditioning, breakfast or step-free access. Ask each property for what you need.

Questions to ask before you book

Ask for the exact location and the last stretch of road, because camps and lodges sit away from the main road. Ask whether a transfer from Jinja, Kampala or Entebbe is offered and what it costs. Ask what the rate includes, and whether rafting, kayaking or a sunset cruise can be arranged through the property or must be booked separately. Ask about age rules for children, and about booking and cancellation terms for your dates.

You can also split your stay: a night in town after you arrive, then a night at the river before the rafting day. That shortens the early drive to the start. Check the pickup time for each place before you decide.

Where to stay in Jinja: frequently asked questions

Should I stay in Jinja town or by the river?

Town suits walking to meals and shops. The river camps suit early rafting starts and a camp setting. Operators run separate pickups for each, so tell them where you stay.

How much does a room cost?

Rates change by season and room type. Ask the property for the current rate and what is included.

Can I camp near the Nile?

One operator lists a camp offer, Adrift Overland Camp, near its river stay. Ask what facilities and access it has before you book.

Can children stay at the island lodge?

The operator names children from 16 years for Wildwaters Lodge. That limit belongs to that lodge only. Ask any other property for its own rules.

Is the Bujagali camp walking distance from town?

No. The camp is about 7 km from the roundabout after the new Nile bridge, plus a final signed turn. Plan a transfer.
