What to do in Jinja at a glance
The list is a selection, not a ranking. Entries 1 and 2 are the source of the Nile and its monuments. Entries 3 to 7 are active: rafting, kayaking, stand-up paddling, bungee and horse riding. Entries 8 to 10 are on or beside the water. Entries 11 and 12 take you out of town to a forest and to a waterfall on Mount Elgon.
Prices are per person and listed for 2026. They come from operators and can change. Book the cruises ahead. One point affects many plans: the old Bujagali Falls lie under a reservoir, so there is no waterfall to walk to there.

The source and the river (1 to 4)
The place the Nile leaves the lake, and the first ways onto the water.
1. See the source of the Nile
The tourist source is the outflow of Lake Victoria into the Victoria Nile. You reach the shore on two banks: Jinja on the east and Njeru on the west. Access and fees can differ between them, and no single ticket covers both. A boat to the spot is reported at roughly $15 to $20 per person for 20 to 45 minutes, but this is only a rough guide.
Source of the Nile guide โ2. Visit the monuments at the source
A column for the British explorer Speke is reported at the western Njeru access, and a bust of Gandhi on the eastern Jinja shore. The Speke story is the European one. People on the lake and river knew the place long before. Count the two monuments as one visit.
Monuments and tips โ3. Go white-water rafting
Rafting is offered up to Grade 5. One operator lists a Grade 5 day for $140, from 16 years, 15 km and 4 to 5 hours on the river. The Grade 3 day costs $140 for adults and $95 for children under 16, from 8 years and 30 kg. Choose one grade, they are not two separate experiences.
Rafting guide โ4. Paddle a kayak
A guided flat-water tour on Lake Bujagali takes 2 hours and costs $40. For white water, a half-day course costs $120 alone or $95 each from 2 people, and a full day $150 alone or $125 each from 2. Equipment and drinks are included in the offers.

5. Try stand-up paddling
The same operator offers stand-up paddling on Lake Bujagali for $40 for 2 hours. A guided tour to the source costs $100 alone or $75 each from 2 people, also 2 hours. The source tour includes equipment, transfers and access fees according to the offer.
Paddling and kayaking โ6. Book a bungee jump
One operator offers bungee from its own tower above the Kalagala area, for body weights of 35 to 110 kg. Arrive 30 minutes before your slot. Once you reach the platform, the attempt counts as begun and is not refundable. A package of rafting and bungee starts at $255 per person. No single jump price is confirmed, and you should treat the jump as booked only with a confirmation.
Bungee details โ7. Ride a horse by the Nile
Nile Horseback Safaris lists $45 for 1 hour, $55 for 1.5 hours and $65 for 2 hours. Usual start times are 10:00 and 14:00, and you must reserve. The weight limit on the ride-yourself safaris is 80 kg. Children from 4 years walk with a guide, for UGX 80,000 for 30 minutes or UGX 130,000 for 1 hour.
Horse riding โOn and beside the water (8 to 10)
Evening light, rapids and an island.
8. Take a sunset cruise
The cruise costs $45, half price for children under 12 and free under 4. It runs from 5 to 7 p.m. and needs a reservation. The price includes an open bar, light snacks and the return transfer from Jinja. A midday cruise at 12:30 costs $30 and includes snacks and transfer, but drinks cost extra.
Boat trips โ9. Look at Itanda and Kalagala
Itanda and Kalagala are the rapids below Jinja that still run. A ministry notice of 5 August 2026 describes a protection project for 2026 to 2031 with riverbank management and ecotourism support. That is not a closure, and it is not an approval for swimming. The area is not a national park, so no park ticket applies.
Itanda Falls โ10. Go to Samuka island
Samuka is an island in Lake Victoria about 9 km from Jinja and about 40 minutes by speedboat. The city names it as a bird area. Ask for the crossing price and the boat before you go, as no current price is confirmed. It is not part of the Ssese Islands.
Lake Victoria at Jinja โOutside town (11 and 12)
A forest close by and a waterfall far to the east.
11. Walk in Mabira Forest
The forest reserve is 26 km from Jinja and 54 km from Kampala. The forest authority lists 68 km of trails and 315 bird species, with hiking, birdwatching and mountain biking. A zipline was offered at a private camp, but its price sheet is from 2024. Ask the operator for the current status. No 2026 entry fee for Mabira is confirmed.
Mabira Forest โ12. Hike at Sipi Falls
Sipi Falls lie at Kapchorwa on Mount Elgon, far east of Jinja. Operators describe three main waterfalls. Transfer times from Jinja range from 3 to 4 hours to 4 to 5 hours, so this is not a half-day trip. One day package for a guided three-falls hike of 3 to 4 hours costs UGX 690,000 alone or UGX 450,000 each for 2 people. A coffee tour of 2 to 3 hours costs $15 for foreigners.

Things to do in Jinja: frequently asked questions
What is the best thing to do in Jinja?
There is no single best choice. Rafting is the main activity, the source of the Nile is the main sight, and a sunset cruise is the easiest way onto the water. The list above is an editorial selection, not an official ranking.
What can families with children do?
A family float on calm water costs $30 for adults and $20 for children, from 4 years, over 7 km and 1.5 to 2 hours. Grade 3 rafting is open from 8 years and 30 kg. The cruises give children under 12 half price. Read the rafting page for age limits.
Can I still see the Bujagali Falls?
No waterfall remains there. The former rapids became calm reservoir water after the dam, which went into operation in 2012. The Itanda Falls page explains what is left of the rapids.
Is Sipi Falls a day trip from Jinja?
It can be, but the transfer takes 3 to 5 hours each way depending on the source, so many visitors stay a night. Check the weather first, because the UK FCDO warns of landslides near Mount Elgon in heavy rain.
Are the activities open every day?
Opening days and seasonal breaks are not published for most offers. The cruises and horse rides need a reservation, so book ahead and ask the operator for the exact day and meeting point.
