How Jinja tours differ

Rafting, flat-water paddling and cruises are different products. A rafting day takes 4 to 5 hours on the river and starts at an inland point reached by transfer, not at the lake. A cruise lasts 2 hours. Kayak and paddle tours are guided and last 2 hours or more. Check three things for each tour: the age and weight limit, the meeting point and what the price covers.

Prices are per person in US dollars, as listed in 2026 by the operators named in the text. They change, and missing child prices or online fees do not mean a tour is free.

What the price covers, and what to check

Descriptions differ. These points decide whether a tour is good value.

Rafting day

The Nile River Explorers day price includes equipment, a briefing and safety support, plus pickup from town or camp to the start. Tell the operator your pickup place the day before. The Grade 5 day leaves the camp at 9:00 a.m. and Jinja at 9:30 to 9:45 a.m. The operators describe life jackets, helmets and safety kayakers, but that is their own statement, not an official certification.

Age and weight

Grade 5 starts at 16 years with this operator, and under 18 guardian conditions apply. Grade 3 starts at 8 years and 30 kg. Another operator lists 16 for its main trip, but its FAQ allows younger people after a fit check and a morning review by the trip leader. An old figure of 12 years is not a general standard.

Cruises

The sunset cruise includes the return trip from Jinja, snacks and an open bar. The midday cruise includes snacks and transfer, with drinks as a cash bar. Both need a reservation. A private boat to the source of the Nile and the shore entry fee are a different cost.

Boat trips โ†’

Kayak and paddle tours

The source tour starts at Jinja Sailing Club and ends at Bourbon Bar and Grill. Equipment, a transfer from Bujagali and entry and exit fees are included in the offer. This is a different product from a motorboat trip to the source.

Source of the Nile โ†’

Bungee

A package with rafting and bungee starts at $255 per person. It is a package price, not a single jump price. Bungee needs a booking confirmation.

Adventure activities โ†’

Weather and water

Rafting, kayaking and paddling mean contact with water, and the US health agency CDC names the Nile and Lake Victoria as places where bilharzia is passed on. A life jacket is recommended on boats. Read the safety page before you book.

Day trips from Kampala and beyond

Jinja is a day trip from Kampala, and further trips start in Jinja.

Rafting day from Kampala

One operator lists a free Kampala shuttle from 4 people and Jinja pickup from 2 people. Its meeting points are Acacia Mall at 6:15 a.m., Sheraton at 6:20 a.m. and Game at Lugogo Mall at 6:30 a.m., and the Jinja pickup is at 8:30 a.m. Pickup from Entebbe is only on request and costs extra. These are the operator's times, not a public timetable.

Getting to Jinja โ†’

Sipi Falls

Sources give 3 to 4 hours or 4 to 5 hours for the transfer from Jinja, so a return trip the same day is a long day. A guided three-falls hike of 3 to 4 hours is listed at UGX 690,000 alone or UGX 450,000 each for 2 people. Confirm the departure point and the transfer with the operator.

Sipi Falls โ†’

Murchison Falls safari

The drive from Jinja takes 5 to 6 hours according to one operator and about 7 hours according to another. A safari is a separate multi-day trip, not a day tour. Park fees are listed separately from any package.

Jinja tours: frequently asked questions

Which tour is best for a first visit?

That depends on age, budget and comfort on the water. A sunset cruise is the easiest start. The Grade 3 rafting day has a lower age limit than Grade 5. Ask the operator whether swimming ability is required for the trip you choose.

Can I do a rafting day as a trip from Kampala?

Yes. One operator lists a Kampala shuttle with set meeting points, and the rafting itself starts near Jinja. Allow for the road, which is about 80 km and often takes 2 to 3 hours or more.

Does the rafting price include equipment?

For one operator, the day price includes equipment, a briefing and safety support. Check this in the description of every tour you book.

What is the difference between a cruise and a kayak tour?

A cruise is a 2-hour boat trip with snacks and drinks, and you sit. The kayak and paddle tours are 2-hour guided tours where you paddle yourself. Both can show birds, but sightings are not guaranteed.

Are tour prices fixed?

No. The prices here are listed examples for 2026 and can change. Children's prices, online fees and group rates may differ.
